Care to lend your computer’s icons to a fundraiser?

We spend an average of 7 hours a day looking at out computer screens, viewing many different file icons as we browse through folders that grow in size every day. What if this could amount to something?

Oxfam has launched a fundraising campaign called Donation Icons: The world’s smaller and smartest media space, as they claim on their website. Their application allows for brands to pay for an advertising space which will become your icon for a particular type of file. The images change during the day, switching ads and allowing for more funds to be raised.

All you have to do is download the application and use your computer as you would normally do. You will be raising money for charity without going out of your way for it: and as a bonus, you will be able to see special offers for your favorite brands.

The app is available both for OSX and Windows. Icons will become smart media spaces that brands can use for advertising, though they will keep a clear label that will help you identify your files don’t be afraid! Every penny obtained from the different brands goes to Oxfam. The more people donating their icons, they say, the more brands will join in and help end poverty.

If you’re a design freak worrying about your computer looking like a banner-filled website from the nineties, don’t fret: the icons still are beautifully designed, such as the ones for Adobe starring the brand Dove.
