Flaticon improvements in 2022

At the end of this year, we look back at some of the improvements and features we brought you in the past 12 months. We’ve worked hard to make Flaticon better for you, we’ve added an additional 2.5M icons this year and we are proud of the recent updates. Let’s summarize the most important ones in this post.

Our guiding star is to help you make beautiful designs faster. During 2022, through surveys and user interviews, we’ve been prioritizing features that would make it easier for you to get consistent icons or speed up your design process.

Let’s go through the list.

Icons with editable strokes

We’ve added a new version of SVG files. It allows you to edit the stroke width and shapes easily. Known by some as a “non-expanded SVG,” this file format gives you much more control of the icon’s look.

It allows you to:

  • Adjust the stroke width – Change how thick or thin the lines are in our editor.
  • Reshape – Move anchor points to customize the shapes.
  • Change curve roundness – Curve or straighten up lines.

These controls make it easier to mix and match icons made by different creators or adjust them to fit your existing design language. Also, you won’t lose style consistency when resizing icons to make them fit different screen sizes.

To find icons with editable strokes and shapes, enable the “Editable strokes” filter at the top of search results. To download in this format, click the little arrow on the “SVG” button and choose “Editable strokes” in the dropdown. The default format is with editable strokes if it’s available.

Search results grouped by style

Finding icons that match is now easier with grouping by style. We have two ways to group icons – by pack or by author style. An author style is a style of icons that come from the same icon designer, and it spans multiple packs and often thousands of icons.

It was previously possible to group search results by pack, but moving forward, we’ve added the option to group by style as well. Like this, getting to a page with all icons in the same style is just one click away.

Once you’ve found a style you like, you can bookmark it and easily get back to it when you need more icons.

Better integration with Figma

Figma has taken the design community by storm. Many designers have or are planning to migrate to Figma. We started developing a brand new Figma plugin in the second half of 2022 and launched a beta version in December. Currently, it allows you to search and import icons in PNG format. We are working on adding SVG, authentication, and many other features soon.

Animated icons

Icons don’t have to be static. In 2022 we started building a new collection of animated icons. The first 3,800 high-quality animated icons are in two-tone style, and We are working on new styles that are coming in 2023.

The animated icons come in multiple formats, such as JSON, After Effects (AEP), GIF and MP4, so they should be easy to integrate into any project or presentation.

With our collection of animated icons, you’ll be able to take your UI design projects up a notch in quality and catch the attention of your audience with micro animations that will give your site a fun and engaging touch.

Merchandise license

You can now license icons from Flaticon as main elements on physical or digital products for resale. Getting icons for web templates, electronic devices, video games, packaging, cups, t-shirts, etc., is no longer a headache.

Behind the scenes

As part of the Freepik Company, in 2022, Flaticon was recognized as a Great Place to Work by the Great Place to Work consultancy – which is something we’re incredibly proud of.

Halfway through 2022, Freepik Company acquired Iconfinder and merged two teams from the leading icon marketplaces.

What’s next?

We will continue to work on ways to help you keep your icon language consistent and your workflow smooth. By improving personalization, we’ll enable easier access to the content you’re looking for. Through improved search results, introducing short-cut keys, or integrations in popular tools such as Figma, we’ll speed up your design processes.

We hope to see you around in 2023. You are always welcome to write or ping us on Twitter if you have ideas for improving Flaticon.
